A comprehensive inventory of the supply of existing recreational trail resources is an essential tool for trail planning in the state of Oregon. Along with an understanding of recreation participation, inventory data can help recreation providers identify the need for additional recreational trails within their coverage areas.

The Oregon Statewide Trails Inventory is intended to provide a systematic review and inventory of the entire public trails system in Oregon. The overall goal of this project is to create databases containing trail information that can be accessed by government agencies, libraries, and recreationists for management and trip planning purposes. The databases will be compatible with geographic information systems (GIS) and will allow agencies and other users to identify and map resources and characteristics for public lands in Oregon. Trail resources in the statewide inventory will include existing and proposed significant roads, trails and accessible areas for legal off-highway vehicle (OHV) operation; non-motorized recreational trips; and water trails.

Trails Inventory Reporting Process

Now that the need for non-motorized trail connectivity has been identified as a key statewide issue, our challenge is to properly address the issue in the 2005-2014 Oregon Trails Plan. Towards this end, OPRD and OSU have developed a method for collecting trail inventory data from recreational providers across the state of Oregon.

The first phase of the trails inventory data collection process is designed to identify existing and proposed non-motorized trails of statewide, regional and local connectivity significance. In phase two, recreation providers will be asked to provide specific information (e.g. trail uses allowed, length of the trail, locations of trailheads) for each trail reported in the first phase of the inventory.

The inventory will also collect trails data for existing and proposed water trails in Oregon. Water trails are corridors between specific locations on waterways typically designed for users of small watercraft such as canoes, sea kayaks, whitewater rafts or kayaks and drift boats.
