Choose an area off the map for a more detailed view of the proposed protection area.
Some rules already on the books will benefit plovers without changing the way you use the beach. Driving ATVs and using fireworks on the beach are two examples; except for designated areas at Sand Lake and the Dunes National Recreation Area, ATV riding is already prohibited on the beach. Neither of those areas are affected by these new rules. Using fireworks on the beach already requires a permit, but no permits will be issued if the proposed emphasis areas are adopted.

Green areas are proposed new plover emphasis areas. While no plovers nest in these areas now, the habitat is good. Over the next 10-15 years, these areas will probably be included in the plover protection plan. Whether or not they actually are depends on changes in the plover population and in the body of research guiding the bird's recovery. If you go to one of the beaches within one of these unoccupied emphasis areas any time of year, you can expect these new rules ...
- Beach camping only allowed designated areas only and by permit.
- Driftwood collection and removal only allowed by permit
These year-round changes are proposed only for the areas marked in green. Other restrictions in the green areas would only be in place from March 15 - September 15 (during nesting season). They are ...
- No dogs
- Motor vehicles of any kind not permitted

Plovers already nest in the pink areas, and these places live with some restrictions to protect the bird now. Some of these areas have been under seasonal restrictions for 10 years. If the new plan is adopted, new year-round changes are in store:
- Beach camping only in designated areas and by permit.
- Driftwood collection and removal only allowed by permit.
While these areas have lived with seasonal limitations for the last few years, the proposed list adds new restrictions for March 15 – September 15:
- Dogs
- Kiteflying
- On the dry sand ... no walking, horseback riding, and other activities. The wet sand remains open.
- Motor vehicles of any kind not permitted
