Cape Meares Lighthouse remains closed
The lighthouse and its interpretive gift store and surrounding area will remain closed through August
August 4th, 2003
Cape Meares Lighthouse, including its interpretive gift store and surrounding area, will remain closed through August because of unexpected delays in restoration work on the structure. Park Manager Pete Marvin said the lighthouse’s gift store extension is expected to be open again in early September. Originally scheduled to open in July, the gift store is operated by the Friends of Cape Meares Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge, which is helping finance the restoration. According to Marvin, the lighthouse itself will probably remain closed until workers complete the restoration later in the month. The entire complex has been closed since June 16. Work began last April to remove and re-fabricate metal detail severely damaged by water leaks. Progress was delayed earlier the summer when lead was found in paint being removed from the building’s surface. The lighthouse is the centerpiece of the 233-acre Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint, 10 miles west of Tillamook on the Three Capes Scenic Loop.
